A monumental task would be bestowed on you.

「天將降大任於斯人也」(A monumental task would be bestowed on you.)

This is actually the first part of an ancient saying from one of the most famous Chinese philosophers, Mengzi. The rest of the sentence is talking about how Heaven would put you through incredible hardships to test and prepare you before it bestows great responsibilities on you.

We can be interpreted as a “chosen” generation that has to go through first the protests then a pandemic, like rites of passage, before entering the society.

This saying comes from a passage, and the last line of the passage reads 「生於憂患而死於安樂」, which means that people survive in times of difficulty but die if they are too comfortable in their surroundings, as supported by his example of how countries would fall easily if there is no good advisers within the country and external threat from other countries.

Full sentence: 孟子曰：「天將降大任於斯人也，必先苦其心志，勞其筋骨，餓其體膚，空乏其身，行拂亂其所為，所以動心忍性，增益其所不能。」

Translation I found online: Mengzi said, “Before God entrusts a man with a ponderous task, He shall distress his mind, tire his limbs, famish his body, deprive him of his possessions, and frustrate his endeavors, so as to strengthen his resolve, fortify his mettle, and enhance his powers.”
